Osborne Richardson and Environmental roles go hand in hand throughout Australia. On this occasion, we have been asked to partner with Inner West Council in Sydney on an exciting new role in Council's Community Sustainability programme. 

As their new Environment Officer, you will immerse yourself on implementing community projects working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and finding creative solutions to urban sustainability issues. The role will work with individuals, groups, business and others in the Environment and Sustainability Group to enhance positive momentum to stakeholder engagement, ongoing project success and broader community partnerships relating to urban sustainability.

You role will be one where keeping between the hedges may be difficult but finding innovative solutions which bring positive outcomes is the reward for colouring outside the lines at times. Your duties will be amazing, and include:
  • Working in partnership with staff from across Council, other local councils, environmental networks, NGOs, Government and community groups to deliver sustainability engagement and support for the community.
  • Coordination of networks and acting as a primary contact for community liaison, e.g. schools and community gardens
  • Build upon existing relationships for external groups such as SSROC, neighbouring local councils, catchment management groups, NGOs, research partners, federal and state government agencies, funding bodies, industry groups, Sydney Water, community and business groups, schools, event/campaign managers, etc.
  • Delivery of community sustainability programs e.g community composting, community gardens, Council environmental grants and other actions as outlined in Council’s Sustainability Strategies.
  • Participating in and delivery of environmental themed events such as festivals, forums and workshops to the community.
  • Preparation of information for Council's website and other communications such as newsletters and social media.

  1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field, such as Environmental Management, Stakeholder Engagement, Sustainability, etc. 
  2. Ability to deliver innovative sustainability programs, projects and engagement to varying audiences.
  3. High standard of communication including; interpersonal and written skills, giving presentations and ability to prepare reports.
  4. Excellent organisational and project management skills.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of key sustainability issues, including climate change, energy, waste and resource recovery, water conservation, biodiversity.
  6. Experience in working with and an understanding of the dynamics of community-based groups and programs
  7. Experience in managing and running community events, workshops and activities.
